Trailer drivers, cleaners continue stir
N.Anand
CHENNAI: Despite the assurances given by the Shipping Minister and Chennai Port Trust (ChPT) Chairman, trailer drivers and cleaners continued their stir for the second day on Monday.
They were steadfast in their demand and urged the authorities to open Gate 2, 2A and 10 and carry out the patch work on the Ennore-Manali road to make it motorable.
Talking to The Hindu, K. Asai Thambi of Anna Labour Union said: “Last night, I told the drivers and cleaners to give up the strike. Initially, they agreed to it, but at midnight they stopped evacuating the import boxes. Currently, export boxes have been pushed inside, while about 7,000 import boxes are waiting to be evacuated. A few more vessels are expected to call in and we will be back to the position as on December 2.” The ChPT officials held a meeting with all the stakeholders on Monday.
During the course of the meeting, it was resolved to ask the authorities concerned to take up the patch work; pressure Customs officials to open Gate 10; and seek permission from police to operate Gate 2 and 2A. Besides, the ChPT officials also suggested opening Gate 5 for a temporary period to lessen the burden on ‘0' Gate, after seeking permission from Police, Railways and Custom officials.
