Bench permits meeting on 2G spectrum issue

Staff Reporter

Voters Awareness Movement to conduct public meeting today

MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday directed the Tirunelveli city police to grant permission to Voters Awareness Movement, a private body, to conduct a public meeting on the 2G spectrum issue at Palai Jawahar Thidal on Tuesday evening.

Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar passed the interim order despite objections raised by Additional Advocate General V. Chellammal Moorthy, who claimed that granting of permission on Tuesday would cause inconvenience to small-time traders of the locality.

The judge ordered the police to permit the meeting on Tuesday after giving due notice to the traders by Monday evening. They were also directed to pass an order by Tuesday morning granting permission for the meeting to be held between 7 and 10 p.m.

Later, the matter was adjourned to Thursday to decide the petitioner's plea to conduct six more meetings.

Earlier, the AAG, on instructions from the Inspector of Tirunelveli Junction police station, said that the permission could be granted only on Wednesday. She also contended that it would not be possible for the police to grant security for a series of seven meetings planned by the petitioner organisation.

On the other hand, petitioner's counsel K. Mahendran contended that his client had already made all arrangements for the meeting on Tuesday. It would not be possible to postpone it as sought by the AAG.
