MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday directed the State Government to expedite the matter related to building a bridge across Vaigai river at Rayarkottai to Uruttimudu road in Theni district in order to solve difficulties faced by school-going children. A Division Bench comprising Justice R. Banumathi and Justice R. Subbiah gave the interim direction to the Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj while hearing a public interest litigation petition taken up suo motu on the basis of a newspaper report. The Bench recorded the submission made on behalf of the Collector that he had asked his subordinate officials to file a report immediately after the newspaper publication and subsequently forwarded a proposal to the Chief Secretary to construct a bridge at an estimated cost of Rs.315 lakh. In another case related to lack of a proper pathway to reach a Government Higher Secondary School at K. Vellakulam in Kallikudi panchayat union near here, the judges recorded the Block Development Officer's statement that the children were using private lands to reach the school and gave time to him till Wednesday to make alternative arrangements.
