Student unrest on college campus leads to examination cancellation

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Student unrest on Khallikote Autonomous College of the city disrupted the examination process on Tuesday. A group of students locked up the front gate of the college. They also did not allow the students appearing for the examination to complete the test. The authorities had to cancel the examination that was held on Tuesday.

Speaking to The Hindu, S.N. Behera, principal of the college, said that a committee was constituted to inquire into the reasons that led to the unrest on the campus. The committee would also identify the erring students so that disciplinary action could be initiated against them. The committee would also provide recommendations so that such incidents could be avoided in future. New date for the cancelled examination would be announced soon. Examinations would be conducted as per schedule from Wednesday, Mr. Behera said. Meanwhile police security was stepped up around the campus.

The root cause of the tension was a girl student of third semester of +3 BA course. The examination started at 10 a.m. As per the rules of the college, no student is allowed to the examination if he or she is late for over 30 minutes. So, the invigilators did not allow her to appear for the examination. But some of her supporters pressed upon the authorities to allow her to appear for the examination. It led to altercation between the students group and the principal and staff of the institute.

Gate locked up

More students reached the institute to create a chaos. They locked up the main gate of the college. They also forcibly entered the examination halls and did not allow the students to write the exam. They even tore up answer sheets of some students. Police had to be called up to bring the situation under control. The gate of the college could be opened at around 1.30 p.m.

The principal said the girl student admitted before the authorities that she was late and did not know the norms of the examination. It was alleged that some students used this small issue to create chaos and indiscipline on the campus.
