dated December 15, 1960: Faster trains

A decision will shortly be taken by the Government of India to introduce high speed trains on the main trunk routes between Delhi, Calcutta, Madras and Bombay, it is learnt. This follows a recommendation made to the Government by a Railway Ministry delegation headed by Mr. N.K. Roy, of the Railway Board, which visited Western European countries some time back to study the railway systems there. According to the delegation, most of the trains on major trunk routes in European countries were averaging about 75 m.p.h. and there were some “crack specials” going up to 85 miles. It has recommended that on the main broad gauge routes, the maximum speed could be fixed at 80 m.p.h.
