Heartbreak for Harika

NEW DELHI: Harika succumbed to China's Ruan Lufei 0.5-1.5 in the rapid tie-break games of the Women World chess championship quarterfinals at Hatay, Turkey, on Wednesday.

Harika, seeded nine, lost the first game with white pieces and then drew next with black.

The triumph saw Ruan join two other Chinese girls and Koneru Humpy in the semifinals.

On Thursday, Ruan will take on former Zhao Xue while Humpy will take on Hou Yifan. Humpy had lost to Hou Yifan in the semifinals of the previous edition.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, Humpy got the draw needed from China's Ju Wenjun in 60 moves for a place in the semifinals.

The hard-earned draw with black pieces, by using her queen effectively against Wenjun's two rooks, completed Humpy's 1.5-0.5 triumph.

In the other quarterfinals in the same half, Hou Yifan drew with Ukraine's Kateryna Lahno in 43 moves to win 1.5-0.5.

For Harika, after Monday's draw against China's Ruan Lufei in the first game, the second too ended in a deadlock in 38 moves.

Down two pawns, Harika raised visions of victory before forcing a draw through perpetual checks.
