NEW DELHI: Riding on his impeccable putting, Sanjay Kumar played a blemish-free first round to take a one-stroke lead on the opening day of the Rs. 10 million LG Masters of PGTI at the Delhi Golf Club here on Wednesday. Sanjay carded a six-under 66 that included three birdies on each half of his round. Shankar Das and Ashok Kumar shared the second spot with a 67 as 14 players returned under-par scores. The Lucknow-based leader closed his round with a 12-foot birdie putt on the 17th and a 14-footer on the 18th. “My putting was solid especially on the back nine. I also hit it well and missed regulations on only two holes. The conditions were not very easy as the wind was switching directions. In that sense, a round of six-under is a great result,” said Sanjay. Ashok, the PGTI Rolex ranking leader, exhibited his tremendous putting skills as he sank birdies from 35 feet and 25 feet on the sixth and 11th holes respectively. Shankar Das banked on two magnificent chip shots that helped him get birdies on the eighth and 14th for a tied-second spot with Ashok. Jyoti Randhawa had to withdraw from the event as he suffered a neck injury while playing a shot on the 11th hole, his second hole of the day. The scores: Sanjay Kumar 66; Shankar Das and Ashok Kumar 67; Vivek Bhandari and Manav Jaini 68; Digvijay Singh, Chirag Kumar, Ajeetesh Sandhu and Vinod Kumar 69; Toran Bikram Shahi, Sujjan Singh, Amardip Sinh Malik, Raju Ali Mollah and Gaganjeet Bhullar 70; Anirudh Goyal, Sandeep Syal and Gaurav Ghei 72; Randhir Singh Ghotra, R. Srinivas, Yusuf Ali, Shamim Khan and Vijay Kumar 73 . — Principal Correspondent
