Tropical countries more prone to diseases: VC

THANJAVUR: Tropical countries are more prone to diseases than other countries in the world, said K.Muthuchelian, Vice Chancellor, Periyar University, Salem, here on Thursday.

Inaugurating an international seminar on ‘Health Economics and Management' organised by Rajah Serfoji Government Arts College here and Indian Council of Medical Research, Muthuchelian said diabetes is a major disorder in tropical countries.

"Diabetes can not be called a disease rather a major disorder of the physiology of a particular organ. Among the tropical countries, India accounts for the maximum number of diabetics and in India, Tamil Nadu accounts for the maximum number of diabetics," Dr. Muthuchelian said. Cancer is a major disease in tropical countries.

Seventy per cent of the people in India depend upon traditional knowledge of medicine.

Medicinal herbs

A total of 8,000 medicinal herbs have been documented in India. Climate change can throw challenges in the medical field, he said.

Dr. Muthuchelian said India has been promoting medical tourism and it is popular in Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi.

The Vice Chancellor released the seminar papers on the occasion.

R. Ambikapathy, principal of Rajah Serfoji Government College, presided over the function.

Daniel C. Mouchart, chief mentor, TISSL International, Belgium, A. Arulraj, organising secretary of the seminar, T. Arivudai Nambi, former syndicate and senate member, Bharathidasan University and A. Uthirapathy, Syndicate Member, Bharathidasan University, spoke.
