Colours of the day: Students get ready to present a dance programme on a nationalistic theme, at Pragnya-2010, a PG cultural meet, at Maris Stella College in Vijayawada on Thursday.

VIJAYAWADA: Students of post-graduate courses from different colleges took an active part in the several events held as part of “Pragnya-2010”, a PG cultural meet organised by the PG department of Maris Stella College, on Thursday. Competitions interestingly titled as ‘Jhankar' (singing), ‘Nupur' (dance), ‘Lalkaar' (general quiz) and ‘Bahaar' (fashion show) gave an opportunity for the students to exhibit their talents and win either prizes or laurels.

The speakers, who addressed the inaugural, underscored the importance of preserving and promoting local culture and heritage as a mark of respect to the legacy of the past. Speaking as chief guest on the occasion, Krishna University Vice-Chancellor M.K. Durga Prasad said the culture and heritage of Krishna district had many facets in view of the notable contributions of the stalwarts here to different fields of culture and arts. He said classical dance form Kuchipudi and various other notable artistic contributions emerged from this district.

Prof. Durga Prasad called upon the students to keep this in mind and promote the local cultures considering the significance of these long-cherished and highly valuable contributions by the past generations from this area. He also advised the students to seize every opportunity to take part in youth meets and cultural events, as participatory spirit would be the key to glowing careers of the youngsters. “In my view, a participant is as good as a winner in any event regardless of the outcome of it. Everybody should foster this spirit,” he observed.

Addressing the valedictory, ABC Imaging managing director T. Gowthami Chowdary inspired the students by explaining about the need for setting goals from the college days itself. College principal Japamalai said that the event was designed to be a platform for excellence among students. S. Subbalakshmi, dean, PG departments, said there was good participation in the singing and dancing contests. Quiz competitions also saw active participation from the students. Fashion show was the highlight of the day's events with the students showcasing their creative and leadership skills, she said.
