‘As per apex court direction, amount should be released by January 24' Only 12.85 lakh students have applied for scholarship renewal HYDERABAD: The government cannot give further time extension for renewal of applications under fee-reimbursement scheme as it will delay release of funds to 13 lakh students awaiting disbursement, Agriculture Minister Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy informed the Legislative Council here on Thursday. Adjournment motion He was responding to a demand by Leader of Opposition Dadi Veerabhadra Rao (TDP), who earlier moved an adjournment motion seeking extension of time to enable over three lakh students to renew their applications. Mr. Vivekananda Reddy, who is the Leader of the House, said that the government had initially given time from October 21 to November 8 for the students to apply online for renewal of scholarships/fee reimbursement. Fresh applications Subsequently, time was given till December 15. Fresh applications, however, could be submitted till December 22, he said. Of the16 lakh students expected to renew under the scheme, 12.85 lakh students had applied for renewal. The online registration and guidelines given to submit supporting documents to extend the scheme only to the deserving could have been one reason for reduction in the number, he said. Verification process As per the Supreme Court direction, the scholarship amount should be released by Jan. 24 and before that, verification process of the students' applications would have to be completed, he said. The Minister, however, said that in order to help eligible students who could not apply due to technical reasons, the government could consider providing a separate time slot after completion of the ongoing verification process for 13 lakh students.
