THRISSUR: Vacant posts in the Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad divisions in Pay Band-1 (of Rs.5,200-Rs.20,200 having a grade pay of Rs.1,800) are likely to be filled soon following an order of the Railway Board. The order dated December 9 (No. E (NG)-II/2009/RR-1/10/Pt.) directs all railway zones to initiate recruitment process immediately to fill current vacancies, including those anticipated for the next two years and those resulting from promotion of staff to higher grades. The recruitment process should exclude “vacancies worked out on the basis of prescribed percentage against ex-servicemen quota for which separate recruitment is in progress.” Eligibility The Union Ministry of Railways decided that the minimum educational qualification for recruitment in Pay Band-1 would henceforth be pass in 10th class or ITI course or equivalent. It also decided that written examination will be held on the same day by all railway zones. Physical efficiency tests too will be conducted by the zones on the same day. Vacancies Since January, 1, 2009, 1,219-odd posts in the Pay Band-1 (having a grade pay of Rs.1,800) category have been lying vacant in the Thiruvananthapuram division. In the Palakkad division, the number of vacant posts in this category is 604. As on January 1, 2008, there were 459 vacancies in the Inter-Railway/Inter-Division request category in the Thiruvananthapuram division, sources said. In the Pay Band-1 (grade pay of Rs.1,800) and Pay Band-2 (grade pay of Rs.4,800) categories, there were 2,54,859 posts lying vacant in Indian Railways and 12,273 posts in Southern Railways as on August 31, 2010. In the same categories, there were 1,594 vacant posts in Thiruvananthapuram division as on August 31, 2010, according to sources.
