KSEB told not to suspend supply to KWA

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Transport Minister Jose Thettayil, who is holding additional charge of Water Resources Ministry, has asked the chairman of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to stop suspension of power supply to the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) pump houses for delay in payment of power bills till a Cabinet sub-committee set up to look into the issue takes a decision.

The Minister's office said here on Friday that the chairman undertook to give necessary directions to the officers in this connection.

The Minister admitted that the KWA was not paying the bills for the electricity consumed by it for the purification and supply of water promptly every month because of its financial crisis and huge revenue expenditure. The KSEB which used to suspend supply of power to pump houses for that had of late resumed that practice.

He said if power was suspended once for a pump house which functioned round-the-clock, it took one week for it to function normally even after resumption of supply. Air entered the pipe if pumping was stopped suddenly and it led to change in pressure and pipe burst. The suspension of water supply without any warning also created a lot of hardship to the people.

The Minister said a Cabinet sub-committee had already been set up to find a solution to the issue taking into consideration the hardship faced by the people due to the problem.
