India needs to believe: Dravid

CENTURION: Rahul Dravid said India first needed to believe it could salvage the first Test if it were to have any chance of actually doing so.

“We are way behind in the game, but we have just got to believe we can do it,” said Dravid, who knows a fair bit about turning fortunes around.

“There's still a lot of cricket left in the series, and we have to keep our heads high, show some fighting spirit with the ball tomorrow (Saturday) and then with the bat in the second innings.”

Asked if it was frustrating that the conditions had improved for batting after India was bowled out, Dravid said, “That's the way Test cricket goes. We needed to get through the difficult period, which we didn't. We have to accept that and not look for excuses.”

“Sure we missed Zaheer, who has been our go-to man in difficult situations when someone has needed to step up. I thought our bowlers did the best they could. It was a learning curve for them, they tried a lot of things, but it didn't work,” said Dravid.

Despite a long, difficult day in the field, Dravid managed to joke about Jacques Kallis' newly acquired head of hair.

“I though the new hairstyle might cramp him a bit — he might spend more time looking in the mirror — but it doesn't seem to have happened. The hairstyle changes but the runs keep coming.”

Alviro Petersen said South Africa wasn't thinking of declaring anytime soon.

“We want to put it beyond them,” said the opener. “The wicket is beginning to quicken up, and we'd like to put pressure on India when the wicket is fast, which is our strength.” — Special Correspondent
