Jai Prakash Yadav rips Bengal apart

Chennai: Railways bagged its second straight bonus point to book a place in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals, after defeating Bengal by an innings and 10 runs in the Super League Group ‘A' match at Delhi's Karnail Singh Stadium.

Hero of day four was veteran all-rounder Jai Prakash Yadav, who took five for 20 to bowl Bengal out for 134 in its second innings.

This victory denied both Bengal and Delhi, which could only take one point from its game against Mumbai, quarterfinal spots.

In Group B, Karnataka made merry against Uttar Pradesh, with each of the six batsmen who batted in its second innings crossing 50. Ganesh Satish (100 not out) and Stuart Binny (127 not out) batted till the game was called off, compiling an unbroken 237 for the fifth wicket.

Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan booked the two knock-out slots reserved for the plate teams. MP defeated Andhra by nine wickets in the semifinal at Indore, while Rajasthan booked its progress thanks to its first-innings lead over Maharashtra.

Quarterfinal line-up: Baroda vs. Railways (Vadodara), Haryana vs. Tamil Nadu (Rohtak), MP vs. Karnataka (Indore), Rajasthan v Mumbai (Jaipur).

The scores: Plate division (semifinals): At Indore: Andhra 230 and 313 in 63.1 overs (G. Shankara Rao 52, B. Sumanth 108, Anand Rajan four for 76) lost to Madhya Pradesh 341 and 204 for one in 40.2 overs (Naman Ojha 102 not out, Mohnish Mishra 75).

At Nasik: Rajasthan 641 and 203 for two in 64.2 overs (Vineet Saxena 79, Hrishikesh Kanitkar 100 not out) drew with Maharashtra 349 in 78.2 overs (Sangram Atitkar 42, Nikhil Paradkar 104, Kishor Bhikane 40, Vivek Yadav four for 63).

Super League:

At Delhi: Mumbai 267 and 493 in 123 overs (Sahil Kukreja 48, Rohit Sharma 148, Prashant Naik 81, Ajit Agarkar 74, Sumit Narwal four for 86, Pradeep Sangwan four for 115) drew with Delhi 201 and 242 for six in 71 overs (Rajat Bhatia 57 not out, Sumit Narwal 79 not out). Points: Mumbai 3, Delhi 1.

At Delhi: Bengal 201 and 134 in 67.2 overs (Laxmi Ratan Shukla 58 not out, Jai Prakash Yadav five for 20) lost to Railways 345. Points: Railways 6, Bengal 0.

At Chennai: Gujarat 173 and 115 for four in 55 overs (Priyank Panchal 42) drew with Tamil Nadu 240 for six decl. in 76 overs (K.B. Arun Karthik 60, S. Badrinath 84, Salil Yadav four for 96).

At Kanpur: Karnataka 416 and 537 for four in 121 overs (Robin Uthappa 67, K.B. Pawan 50, Amit Verma 89, Manish Pandey 50, Ganesh Satish 100 not out, Stuart Binny 127 not out) drew with Uttar Pradesh 319. Points: Karnataka 3, UP 1 .

Corrections and Clarifications

The Sport Page report, "Jai Prakash Yadav rips Bengal apart" (December 19, 2010), wrongly said in the Scores column that Agarkar scored 74 runs in Mumbai's second innings. It was Iqbal Abdullah who scored 74 runs.
