GOOD EFFORT:Muhammed Ijas set a new meet record in the senior boys' discus throw.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three records were set on the opening day of the 54th State School Athletic meet at the University stadium here on Saturday.

Fifteen year-old Sreenith Mohan of Sree Krishna HSS, Guruvayoor was easily the standout performer on the first day that saw Mar Basil HSS take a five-point lead over arch-rival St. George HSS.

Sreenith broke a long standing record in junior boys' high jump when he cleared 1.98m while winning the gold. Sreenith broke R. Anil Kumar's old mark (1.90m) set in 1996. In fact, Sreenith destroyed the field in his first attempt when he cleared 1.88m and went on to break the old mark by clearing 1.91m.

Sreenith cleared 1.98 in his first try but failed in his attempt to break the national mark which stood at 2.01m. It was a convincing performance by the lanky youngster as the second and third place finishers could clear only 1.84m.

Chitra's career-best

P.U. Chitra's late burst in senior girl's 3000m saw her set a new mark and return a sub-10 minute time for the first time in her career. Chitra stayed with the lead bunch and broke away to clock 9:58.20. She erased the five-year-old record set by Idukki's Jijimol Jacob in 2004.

The day's last record was set by Mar Basil's Muhammed Ijas in senior boys discus throw. Ijas won the gold clearing a distance of 40.67m and in the process improved his own record (38.69) set last year in Thiruvalla.

Another athlete to catch attention was World junior school games silver medallist Binish K. Shaji who effortlessly won the senior boys long jump in 7.16m.

Muhammed led Mar Basil's dominance in the field events that saw last year's holder lead the points table with 19 points. St. George is lying a close second with 14 points.
