Cancer awareness marathon held

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: More than 2,000 persons gathered at Marudhamalai foothills on Sunday morning with an objective: beat cancer.

At 6 a.m., the men and women vowed to run around 30 km to create awareness on cancer. The occasion was ‘Kovai Marathon 2010', organised by the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital Limited.

The runners, young and old, covered 28 km to reach the hospital premises. City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu flagged off the marathon.

A release from the hospital said the prime objective of organising the event was to educate the members of the society on the importance of prevention and treatment of cancer and drive home the point that both the aspects were essential for leading a happy life.

Members of Rotary Club, Maruthi Club, Walkers Club, Kovai Athletic Association and many other organisations took part in the run. U.K. Ananthapadmanabhan, president of the hospital, led the Kovai Marathon 2010.

He also gave away prizes to winners.
