Kodoth Govindan Nair Kasaragod: Kodoth Govindan Nair, 68, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary, died in Christian Medical College at Vellore in Tamil Nadu on Saturday night following a protracted illness, family sources said here on Sunday. Govindan Nair had been undergoing treatment in a hospital in Ernakulam over six months after a brain haemorrhage. With his health condition remaining critical, he was shifted to the Vellore hospital on December 17. Govindan Nair, a lawyer by profession, entered politics in his student days and had been the president of the District Congress Committee. He had been a loyalist of the former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran, and he became known for contesting for a Rajya Sabha seat defying the directive of the national-level leadership of the Congress. Govindan Nair is survived by two daughters. His wife predeceased him. Govindan Nair is likely to be cremated on Monday, sources said. Mourned Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has condoled the death of Govindan Nair. The Chief Minister expressed deep condolences in a message here on Sunday. KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, in a statement, said the Congress had lost a strong leader.
