CHICKBALLAPUR: Chickballapur Zilla Panchayat (ZP) will practically have all new faces as only four of the 27 sitting members are contesting the ZP elections to be held on December 26. Most of the sitting members will not be able to contest the elections from the seats they were elected in, in 2005 as the reservation category of these seats have now been changed. Prominent among those who will not be able to seek re-election are: zilla panchayat president Vinutha Srinivas, vice-president A.V. Poojappa, the former president M.B. Chikkanarasimhaiah and the former vice-president Vanajakshamma (all of Congress); and senior members G.R. Narayanaswamy and P. Jagganath, both from Janata Dal (Secular). However, senior member D.V. Obalappa is seeking re-election. He has not only changed his party but also the seat. Mr. Obalappa, who had won as a Congress nominee from Dibburahalli in Shidlaghatta taluk in 2005, is now in the fray as a BJP candidate from Jangamakote. Similarly, following the change in reservation, the former ZP vice-president Chandur Venkatesh of the Congress, representing Beechaganahalli in Gudibande taluk, will contest from neighbouring Somenahalli seat. C.R. Narasimha Murthy (BJP) of Vidurashwattha in Gauribidanur taluk and H.V. Kamalamma (Congress) of Chilukalanerpu in Chintamani taluk are the two other sitting members who are seeking re-election. However, some of the sitting members have fielded their spouses or close relatives for the seats presently represented by them. Meanwhile, this would be the maiden election to the Chickballapur ZP. The previous ZP elections were held in 2005, before Chickballapur was carved out of Kolar district in August 2007. Accordingly, a separate Chickballapur ZP was created by splitting the Kolar ZP.
