MAKING A POINT:A.S. Anand, former Supreme Court Judge and Chairman of the Empowered committee for Mulaperiyar dam, interacting with Kerala officials at the Collectorate in Theni on Monday. THENI: A high-level empowered committee on Mullaperiyar dam interacted with the district administration here on Monday afternoon and reached Thekkady for further discussion. The committee, constituted by the Supreme Court, will inspect the dam on Tuesday morning and proceed to Cochin in the afternoon. Chairman A.S. Anand, former Judge of Supreme Court, and A.R. Lakshmanan came to Theni from Madurai and another member K.T. Thomas, former Supreme Court judge, was waiting for them at Power House in the lower camp after inspecting it individually. The committee did not receive any petition submitted for farmers' associations. When Kerala Irrigation Secretary T. Jayakumar requested the committee members to visit the power house, Justice Anand cautioned him against deviating from the schedule. The Kerala officials told him that they had already provided the information through a letter upon which the he ordered them to show it. The Supreme Court had constituted this committee to go into all issues, including the safety aspects of the dam, raising the water level beyond 136 ft as also Kerala's demand for a new dam.
