Prakash enters main draw

MUMBAI: Jolly Prakash made things difficult for himself before registering a 21-17, 21-8 victory over Mohd. Raisuddin of Bangladesh in the qualification round of the Tata Open international challenge at the Cricket Club of India courts here on Tuesday. The win helped Prakash enter the main draw.

Prakash took time to get off the blocks before his stroke-making ability and confidence at the net helped him dominate the contest.

The Indian qualifier scored points with wristy flicks and deft smashes.

Raisuddin levelled the score twice in the first game and was all at sea in the second, beaten by returns whipped across his body by the young Indian. The Indian faces another qualifier in the men's first round — Lee Jian Jee (Malaysia).

Nigel D'Sa grabbed the opportunity to play the qualifying round by defeating Siriwat Matayanumati (Thailand) in three games. He was among those on the reserve list in the draw before withdrawals in the main draw gave him the chance.

Nigel needed 43 minutes to subdue his Thailand opponent 17-21, 21-8, 22-20 and will face Indonesia's Riyanto Subagja in the first round.

Three other Indians made the grade — Rohan Castelino, Mayank Behal and K. Nandagopal.

Pawar pulls out

Meanwhile, third seed Anand Pawar withdrew from the event due to flight disruptions out of Europe.

The Tata Open is organised by Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy under the auspices of Badminton Association of India and Maharashtra Badminton Association.
