Principal Correspondent

CHAMPION OUTFIT:Ernakulam district, winner of the overall title.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: St. George's HSS (Kothamangalam) pipped archrival Mar Basil HSS (Kothamangalam) by half-a-point to wrest back the title in the 54th State schools' athletic meet at the University stadium here on Tuesday. St. George finished with 131.5 points.

Mar Basil (131) was second while Kumarputhur (Palakkad) came a distant third with 68. Mar Basil had won the best schools' title last year at Thiruvalla to end St. George's reign.

The race for the best school went down to the wire after Mar Basil covered a lot of ground on the final day by gaining points in the field events. However, R. Samuel's third place finish in the sub-junior boys' 200m gave his team the valuable point which helped it clinch the crown.

Five records set

Five records were set on the final day. Jijin Vijayan's scorching run (21.92s) in the senior boys' 200m was the high point of the day. Jijin beat the field with a sudden burst on the curve and strode effortlessly to win the gold. He pushed favourite Binish K. Shaji to the second spot and broke Renju Remanan's mark (22.10) set in 2008. Another athlete to grab attention was Neena Elizabeth Baby who capped a fine meet by winning her third gold. She set her second record of the meet in the senior girls' shot put. Neena cleared a distance of 40.72m to improve upon Anita Mathew's five-year-old mark of 40.23.

Lukmal Hakkim broke the 400m hurdles record, clocking 53.48m, and erased Vikas Chandran's mark of 53.84 established last year.

The other two records were set by Jenimol Joy (in junior girls' triple jump) and the Ernakulam senior boys' 4x400m relay team.

Kerala sports minister M. Vijayakumar gave away the prizes.
