New paradigm:Christodas Gandhi, CMD, TEDA, M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister and CHENNAI: The State Government will formulate an action plan on the lines of National Action Plan on Climate Change in which solar energy will get due significance, said Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday. Delivering the valedictory address at ‘Tamil Nadu Solar Convention 2010' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA), he said that Tamil Nadu was the first State to harness wind energy on a big scale and it accounted for 43 per cent of the country's installed capacity. “The installed capacity of power generation in Tamil Nadu from the renewable energy resources has now touched 5,500 Mega Watts, representing 33 per cent of India's renewable energy installed capacity. Wind power, bagasse based co-generation, bio-mass power and small hydro power projects have contributed towards this great achievement... Under the Rooftop Power and Stand alone Small Grid-connected Power scheme, seven SPV projects, of each 1 MW capacity have been sanctioned for the State,” he said. During 2009-2010, the State generated nearly 9,600 million units amounting to 13.12 per cent of grid consumption. Similarly, as against the target of 10 per cent share of renewable energy in the total grid power set by the Centre, Tamil Nadu's share was 36 per cent. Mentioning that Tamil Nadu was a pioneer in promoting renewable energy and it was poised to lead the way in solar energy too, he asked entrepreneurs to find the means and technology to meet the increasing energy needs in an environmentally sustainable manner to reduce carbon emissions to save the planet from green house effect. Releasing the report on ‘Solar roadmap for Tamil Nadu,' he called upon the industry to participate in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission to develop clean and green energy. Ramesh Kymal, chairman, Tamil Nadu Solar Convention 2010, urged the State Government to come out with a comprehensive ‘Solar energy development policy' incorporating a few key recommendations such as announcing a land allotment policy for solar projects; creating a separate fund for the development of renewable energy; establishing solar SEZs; and reducing taxes and duties on batteries to reduce the overall cost of the system.
