THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Government will soon move the Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs to establish a multi-purpose indoor stadium in Kasaragod and a synthetic track for athletics at the Nehru Stadium in Kottayam under the newly-instituted Urban Sports Infrastructure scheme.

A meeting chaired by the Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar here on Wednesday cleared the proposals made by the Kerala State Sports Council in this regard and held preliminary discussions on the various aspects to be included in the detailed project report to be submitted to the Union Government.

A committee comprising Kottayam MLA V.N. Vasavan, the Kottayam municipality chairman, the Kottayam District Sports Council president, Olympian Suresh Babu and Kerala State Athletics Association officials, M. Velayudhan Kutty and Tony Daniel, was formed to prepare the report with regard to the proposal of laying a synthetic track at Kottayam.

Project report

The District Sports Council, which has already drawn up a project report for an indoor stadium within the premises of the Government College (Kasaragod) was asked to discuss the formalities regarding the constitution of a management committee with the District Collector and resubmit the report.

KSSC president T.P. Dasan, while briefing The Hindu, said while infrastructure schemes were being taken up either as part of the preparations for the 35th National Games or by the KSSC in other districts, Kasaragod and Kottayam lacked modern sports infrastructure.

Under the scheme, Rs. 5.5 crore will be made available for laying the synthetic track and Rs. 6 crore for the construction of an indoor stadium. Official sources said the detailed reports for the Kasaragod and Kottayam projects would be submitted to the Union Government during the second week of January 2011.
