Raichur
Problem of excess:A farmer awaits the sale of red gram at the APMC yard in Raichur on Wednesday. Raichur: Transactions at the Raichur Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard came to a halt on Wednesday, following an unexpected increase in the arrival of paddy and red gram. Transactions were normal at the APMC yard till Monday. However, the arrival of paddy and red gram had suddenly increased on Tuesday. More than 50,000 quintals of paddy and 42,000 quintals of red gram arrived on Tuesday. But normal transactions came to a total halt on Wednesday as traders were not willing to procure the commodities. According to official sources, the heavy arrival of agricultural commodities continued on Tuesday even as traders had yet to clear the commodities that were purchased in the past two days. Apart from the arrivals from within the district, farmers from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh have also been bringing paddy and red gram on a large scale. This was because prices of the commodities in Andhra Pradesh had fallen in the past few days, while the prices of these commodities at Raichur were stable. On Tuesday, the APMC registered the arrival of 21,330 quintals of red gram; 10,270 quintals of paddy and 550 quintals of onion. But the demand for these commodities has come down as a huge reserve of more than 90,000 quintals of paddy, red gram and onion has been stocked unsold at the APMC yard. Nevertheless, prices of paddy and onion have been on the rise. Paddy has been selling at a price between Rs. 969 and Rs. 1,018 a quintal, as against Rs. 790 and Rs. 900 last week. Onion has been selling at a price between Rs. 800 and Rs. 4,700 a quintal, as against Rs. 750 and Rs. 3,860 last week, the sources said.
