‘Disillusioned' voters threaten poll boycott

Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA: The people of Changaru-Hosapet and Salur in Shimoga district have threatened to boycott the zilla and taluk panchayat polls, condemning the failure of the administration to address their problems.

Residents of Salur in Tirthahalli taluk said they would boycott the election to protest against the efforts to sell public land for commercial purposes.

They staged a protest in this regard.

They said the beneficiaries of 24-acre of government land near the village, which was used as grazing field as allotted to 12 farmers in 1983-84, had not undertaken any cultivation there so far.

Salur was situated 2 km from the historical place Kavaledurga, where business giants were trying to purchase the allotted land for commercial purposes.

People of Salur had opposed using the land, which was known as “Aramanebyana” for commercial activities.

The land had two graveyards and people here had emotional attachment with it.

The villagers had demanded that the land should not be transferred for commercial purpose.

The land should be handed back to gram panchayat and sites allotted to deprived families here, the residents urged.

Several memoranda submitted toTirthahalli MLA Kimmane Rathanakar and the assistant commissioner in this regard had gone futile.
