CHENNAI: Seventeen thousand and five hundred youngsters, who have been chosen under the State government-funded skill development scheme, will receive appointment orders from Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in Chennai on January 5. Announcing this in a statement on Wednesday, Mr. Karunanidhi said the government had borne the expense of training for the youth, for which Rs.50 crore had been set apart. The youth would go through training in various industrial establishments before getting absorbed. Initially, the scheme announced by him in his Independence Day address was being implemented in six districts — Tiruvarur, Tiruvallur, Tirunelveli, Nagapattinam, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. As many as 49,495 youth had registered at job camps in the six districts. Of them, 17,500 were selected. Recalling an assurance given in his party's election manifesto in 2006, Mr. Karunandhi gave an exhaustive account of the details of persons who had been recruited by different departments after his party assumed charge in May 2006. So far, about 4.98 lakh persons had secured government jobs. Of them, approximately 1.61 lakh persons were recruited by the Social Welfare and Nutritious Programme Department; 1.05 lakh by the School Education Department; 42,000 by transport corporations; 26,000 by the erstwhile electricity board and 33,800 by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department. Apart from the enhanced quantum of unemployment allowance, he explained how scores of people had been employed through job fairs held in different districts in recent years.
