Murder accused who escaped from jail held

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: In a joint operation, the Chennai Police and Prison Department personnel on Tuesday night nabbed Karthik (25), accused in a murder case who escaped from the Puzhal central prison here on December 14.

“A patrol team of the Esplanade police noticed Karthik robbing a container lorry driver. On seeing the police vehicle, he escaped from the scene. Police chased and nabbed the accused near the Reserve Bank of India subway,” Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said on Wednesday.

After escaping from the prison, Karthik committed two chain-snatching offences in different parts of the city. “He was produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody. We will take him into custody for further interrogation,” he said.

On the security arrangements for Christmas and New Year, Mr. Rajendran said a meeting of hotel representatives would be convened on December 28. “We want to ensure that there is no use of drugs. Steps will be taken to prevent drunken brawls at New Year parties and there will be time restrictions for the parties.”

Asked why police did not remove students who blocked traffic on Anna Salai on Tuesday, he said their grievances were genuine and senior police officials held discussions with them in an attempt to persuade them to disperse. “Even the Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare and Tribal Welfare and the department Secretary were there…since traffic was held up on both sides [of Anna Salai] we were concentrating on diverting them to other routes. We do not want to use force on unarmed people. Police will exercise restraint to the extent possible,” he said.
