Bangalore: Governor H.R. Bhardwaj here on Wednesday asked Indian exporters to “go the Chinese way” to increase exports.

Speaking after presenting awards to exporters for 2008-09 from the southern region at an event organised by EEPC India (known earlier as the Engineering Export Promotion Council), Mr. Bhardwaj said: “The only way to increase exports is by adopting the Chinese way, by promoting exports in exclusive special economic zones.”

Outlining some of the “new challenges” faced by exporters, Mr. Bhardwaj said: “The WTO (World Trade Organisation) factor is a major feature of the global economy, which requires exporters to be competitive on not only tariffs but also in terms of quality.”

Productivity

He urged exporters to not complain too much about “labour problems” but to increase workers' productivity by imparting training.

“You must negotiate wages at a reasonable level while also training your workers,” he told exporters.

Ashok Leyland Ltd. was awarded the Gold Trophy for being the top exporter from the southern region. Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. won the award in the merchant category and Diamond Engineering (Chennai) Pvt. Ltd. was adjudged the best exporter among medium-sized units. IGP Engineers won the Gold Trophy for being the best small-sized units for exports.
