‘Double Kanyakumari-Chennai track'

SIVAKASI: The Nadar Mahajana Sangam has demanded immediate doubling of the Kanyakumari-Chennai broad gauge railway track.

The two-day centenary function of the sangam and 66th conference concluded here on Sunday passed a resolution to that effect.

The doubling would enable operation of additional trains on the route for the benefit of traders and people of the southern districts.

Castes like Sanar, Moopar and Gramani which were categorised as backward class should be make most backward classes.

The Palm Workers Welfare Board could not function properly due to non-allocation of adequate funds, a resolution said seeking Rs.100 crore allocation for the board by the State Government.

The State Government should allow toddy tapping and sell it through the TASMAC shops as the palm workers were reeling under poverty. Group houses, monthly assistance and pension scheme for palm workers were also sought.

The conference appealed to the State Government to set up a Department of Kamarajar Study and re-introduce a lesson on the former Chief Minister in school textbooks.

The State Government should provide free power supply to salt pans as given to farm wells.
