Bangalore: As much as 58 per cent of the 4,080 students studying in various post-graduate courses in Bangalore University will get scholarship of Rs. 500 per month from January 2011.
A decision has been taken by the university's Finance Committee, which met under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor N. Prabhu Dev here on Wednesday.
The committee unanimously approved providing educational support of scholarship at Rs. 500 a month each for students of economically backward sections of society for 10 months of the academic year.
The budget outlay for one year, which works out to be Rs. 1.18 crore, was unanimously approved, and it will be implemented from January 2011.
The decision has been taken keeping in mind the need to making higher education accessible to economically weaker sections of society and also ensure that education is financially affordable to such students, who join Bangalore University, the release added.
Meanwhile, the committee also considered the demand of teachers and faculty members of the university to pay UGC arrears from December 24, 2009 to March 2010 which required Rs. 3.4 crore.
