Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Former Union Minister and BJP senior leader Bandaru Dattatreya on Thursday demanded input subsidy at the rate of Rs.5,000 per acre, compensation for crop loss and a one year moratorium on loans, besides rescheduling the loans for farmers in the State who suffered loss due to recent heavy rains. Talking to The Hindu, the BJP leader who was in the city to participate in the party's rally and ‘storm the Collectorate' programme to protest against the Government policy which was anti-farmer, he said the Rs.6,000 input subsidy announced by the government worked out to Rs.2,400 an acre while the farmer had lost Rs.15,000 per acre of paddy, Rs.25,000 an acre of tobacco, Rs.22,000 an acre of cotton, Rs.45,000 an acre of plantain and Rs.60,000 in the case of mirchi. “The Chief Minister should rethink on the amount of compensation to be paid to arrest suicides of farmers which reached an alarming 118 so far,” he said.
