Cold wave kills 3 in Jharkhand

Staff Reporter

RANCHI: Three persons, including two women, died in different parts of Giridih due to severe cold, even as Jharkhand witnessed the most intense cold wave of the decade. Weather officials on Thursday said the chill weather would continue for some more time.

The minimum temperature dipped to one degree Celsius in Kanke area of Ranchi, and two degrees in Mackluskiganj, around 45 km from here.

In Bokaro, the temperature was 5 degrees Celsius. “The situation will continue to remain the same for the next three to four days,” said G.K. Mohanty, an official at the meteorological office.

Mr. Mohanty said the western winds were conducive to the formation of a cold wave in the State, especially in the hilly terrain. As per the chart prepared by the meteorological department based on temperature recorded during the past 40 years, the mean minimum temperature for December has been 10.2 degrees and the mean maximum temperature 23 degrees Celsius for Ranchi.
