TAMBARAM: A huge tree in Urapakkam has been stripped to its trunk as it came in the way of a huge cut-out installed by Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam cadre.

The cut-out, over 30 feet tall, is one of the many put up by the party on GST Road to announce its conference planned in Salem for January. The party cadre allegedly chopped off the branches of the tree to improve the visibility of the cut out.

Urapakkam residents said that on Tuesday morning they saw the cut-out and the tree nearby untouched. But, when they went for morning walk on Wednesday, all that remained of the tree was its trunk, measuring about 10 feet from the ground. Enquiries with residents revealed that the Raintree (Albizia Saman) was chopped on Tuesday evening.

A Kancheepuram district unit functionary of the DMDK said the tree was already withering when the cut-out was being erected. On why it was stripped, he said that he would speak to the local functionaries of his party to get a clarification.
