MADURAI: The multi-purpose information centre coming up at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple to disseminate information on all temples in the State in three languages will be inaugurated on December 31.

The centre is being established by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Department at a cost of Rs.5 lakh. It is primarily aimed at disseminating information to north Indian devotees and foreign tourists, Joint Commissioner of HR and CE Department and temple Executive Officer R. Padmanaban told The Hindu here on Thursday.

“The centre is coming up near the Amman Sannidhi entrance on the eastern side of the temple. We are also going to put up a topographical map, which would provide the location of all important areas in the temple, near the South tower entrance,” he said.

A person would be appointed exclusively to manage this information centre. The temple is planning to recruit a person fluent in Hindi and competent in handling computers. The Centre would be able to give information on puja and darshan timings of all temples in the State besides other logistical details such as availability of accommodation. The centre was being established following a directive from the HR and CE Commissioner P.R. Shampath.

The HR and CE Minister K.R. Periakaruppan had announced in the Assembly that such centres that would provide information on all temples would be established in all important temples in the State.

A touch screen system providing all information on the Meenakshi temple such as its history, significance, festivals and important events would also be installed.

The operator would provide details of puja timings and book tickets also, said Mr. Padmanaban.

Silver door

The ‘Nattukottai Nagarathar Sangam' has come forward to install a door made out of pure silver for the ‘Palli Arai' of Goddess Meenakshi. It was bearing the entire cost for this door, which was being made out of 70 kilograms of pure silver. The Nattukottai Nagarathar Sangam was making the door themselves.

The Executive Officer estimated that silver alone would cost Rs.34 lakh while the labour could cost around Rs.5 lakh.

At present, door to the ‘Palli Arai' was made out of brass. The new door would also be installed on December 31, he said.
