Twelve male solo artistes to perform with Ashish Khokar

Venue is Alliance Francaise de Bangalore

Vibrant: Satyanarayan Raju, Praveen Kumar, Sheshadri Iyengar, Tushar Bhatt, Murlimohan Kalva and B.P. Sweekruth are among the 12 dancers who will perform at the valedictory ceremony of the Dance DISCourse programme in Bangalore on December 30.

Bangalore: The six-month “Dance DISCourse” programme, an interactive platform for discussion and learning, including talks, film screenings, and dance performances among its varied schedule, will hold its concluding session on December 30.

Twelve male solo artistes will perform, with dance scholar Ashish Khokar, Chair of the Dance History Society, conducting the evening. Two new awards will also be instituted at the finale in memory of scholar and dance archivist Mohan Khokar and Bangalore-born dancer Ram Gopal. Astounded at the response to Dance DISCourse, which he says ran to a full hall at every session, Mr. Khokar said that the presence of lay people among dance aficionados was particularly encouraging. Deploring the fact that dancers from the State have been “totally marginalised” on the national stage, he felt that Karnataka has proved “the runt of the litter” in this respect. Hence, this year's awards are to be presented only to Bangalore-based contributors to the field of dance.

Great care has also been taken to ensure that there is no pressure on the three-person panel which will select the awardees. A “secret jury” comprising senior and experienced connoisseurs, scholars and patrons of the arts (whose identities will only be revealed on the day of the event) will decide who the winners are. These unique awards are to be presented to recipients between the ages of 35 and 50 years. The recipients will be given three assured performances in national dance festivals and one foreign tour, along with a residency or teaching assignment within India or abroad, and lifetime membership to the Dance History Society of India.

The finale will take place 6 p.m. on December 30 at the Alliance Francaise de Bangalore.
