A private party has been allowed to distribute food items to government schools. BANGALORE: Congress leader Rani Satish on Thursday alleged that the State Government was distributing poor quality food items supplied by a Tamil Nadu private company to 48 lakh poor children in anganwadis in the State affecting their health. Speaking to presspersons here, she said that the Government had allowed a private party to distribute mid-day meals to children of government schools violating the orders passed by the Supreme Court and the then S.M. Krishna Government. Ms. Satish said that women were contesting in more than 50 per cent of the seats in the zilla panchayat elections and appealed to the people, especially women, to cast vote in their favour, so that the interest of both women and children were looked after. She criticised Excise Minister M.P. Renukacharya for distributing saris and sweaters to women in temples. KPCC Media Department chairman B.K. Chandrasekhar said that the Congress would lodge a complaint with the State Election Commission against the Minister. The Commission should take suo motu action against violations of election code of conduct and curb such illegal activities, he said. He said that it was the duty of the State Government to initiate action against hoarders of vegetables such as onion under the Essential Services and Commodities Act. Prof. Chandrasekhar demanded a statement from Minister for Power Shobha Karandlaje, who has additional charge of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs on the situation arising out of shortage of onion in the market. However, they complimented Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for imposing an immediate ban on export of onion to check rising price.
