Stray dogs removed from college campus

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The College of Engineering, Guindy, on Thursday, removed stray dogs from the campus. A section of students raised concern about the methods employed to catch the dogs and the way the animals were handled while being taken to a southern suburb.

M. Sekar, Dean, CEG, said he had ordered the removal of the dogs as a faculty member was chased by them recently. “As we were unable to contact the Chennai Corporation, we hired people to remove and drop the animals beyond Tambaram,” he said.

An engineering student said around 20 dogs was caught and the techniques used were violent. Mr. Sekar said that he was not aware of the catchers' level of training in animal handling.

The operation was suspended following the intervention of the Blue Cross of India (BCI).

S. Chinny Krishna, vice-chairman of the Animal Welfare Board of India, said had they approached BCI, the dogs would have been removed properly. The operation was illegal and in violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA), 1960 and the Animal Birth Control Dog Rules 2001.
