‘Decentralisation of powers is brainchild of Congress' ‘BJP has withdrawn executive powers of representatives'
M. Mallikarjun Kharge AURAD (GULBARGA DISTRICT): Union Labour and Employment M. Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday launched a frontal attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the State for derailing the panchayati raj system by withdrawing the powers enshrined in the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act. Launching the party campaign for the ensuing zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat elections on January 1 in the district, Mr. Kharge said the BJP had no moral right to seek votes in the election as it had done little to strengthen the panchayati raj system. He said that the BJP government in the State had withdrawn the executive powers and the powers to take up development works with the funds provided to them by legislators. The panchayati raj institutions have been made just figure heads without any actual powers. He said that the decentralisation of powers to panchayati raj institutions was the brainchild of the Congress and during its rule the party had ensured that the elected representatives of the zilla panchayat had executive powers. Ridiculing Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa for his statements that he would move to Central politics, Mr. Kharge said that such kind of statements were being made out of frustration and fear that the party would lose the zilla and taluk panchayat elections. Mr. Kharge alleged that the BJP Government in the State acquired lands of farmers in the name of industrialisation, but later denotified the same and distributed them to the relatives and friends of party leaders. Later, Mr. Kharge accompanied by other senior leaders of the party including District Congress Committee president Sharanprakash Patil, the former Mayor Iyereddy and others addressed series of election campaign meetings in Gulbarga, Chitapur and Sedam taluks in the district.
