Hyderabad is the only other city in State to qualify for funds GVMC proposes to take up development of 117 slums in first phase VISAKHAPATNAM: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is likely to get funds for construction of 10,000 housing units in the first phase of the slum development programme – Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) – during the current financial year if it sends a detailed project report (DPR) by the end of January. Workshop Municipal Commissioner V.N. Vishnu, who attended a workshop on RAY in Hyderabad early this week, said 10 to 12 cities in the country, where the survey for the programme had been done, participated in the workshop. Besides Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad was the only other city to have qualified from the State. Secretary, Union Ministry of Urban Housing and Poverty Alleviation, Kiran Dhingra, attended the meeting. Survey The Commissioner said while the household survey was completed, the detailed project report with GIS-mapping, physical and social infrastructure and land availability should be sent to make it eligible for funds in 2010-11. If land was available, the development would be taken up in situ, otherwise ex situ. The municipal corporation identified 394 acres of land for ex situ development. It was estimated that a total of 1.82 lakh housing units were required for development of 741 slums in the city under RAY. First phase The municipal corporation proposed to take up development of 117 slums in the first phase during the current year.
