Saheli suffers shock defeat

KOLKATA: Unheralded Priya Ranjan Das shocked WIM Saheli Dhar Barua in the second round of the Mayor's Cup FIDE-rated chess tournament here at the Town Hall on Saturday.

Saheli recovered from the loss and won with ease against Anil Kr Nair in just 23 moves in the third round. A total of 27 players lead the field after the third round.

National under-13 champion Diptayan Ghosh was one of the prominent names among the leaders as he won both his games.

Over 300 players are participating in the tournament in the 10-round Swiss league meet for players below 2200 ELO rating. The meet is being organised by Kolkata Municipal Corporation in association with the Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy.  

Important results: Third round: Nihar Ranjan Banerjee (2) lost to Anjan Mallick (3); Diptayan Ghosh (3) bt Saikat Mullick (2); Prasanta Mondal (2) lost to Joydev Saha (3); Abdus Siddique (2) lost to Swapan Mitra (3); Kamal Kanti Pal (2) lost to Bibhas Bhowmik (3); Chandrasish Majumder (3) bt Ahmad Niaz (2); Sandipan Chatterjee (3) bt Kaustuv Kundu (2) .
