Elaborate arrangements in place for polls

There are 1,082 booths, nearly 9.84 lakh voters in Chitradurga district


The BJP and Congress are contesting in all 34 ZP constituencies 125 booths have been identified as hypersensitive


Chitradurga: With the preparations having been completed, the district is all set for the December 26 zilla and taluk panchayat polls.

While the district administration has made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the polls, the District Police has deployed adequate force.

As many as 151 are in the fray for the 34 zilla panchayat seats and the number for the 129 taluk panchayats stands at 497. The authorities have set up 1,082 booths and there are around 9,83,890 voters in the district. The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party are contesting in all the 34 zilla panchayat constituencies while the Janata Dal (Secular) is contesting in only 25.

The BJP is contesting in all the 129 taluk panchayat constituencies while the Congress is contesting in 127 and the Janata Dal (S) 96. There are 48 independent candidates for the zilla panchayats and 126 for the taluk panchayats. In addition, the Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded eight candidates for the zilla and 14 for the taluk panchayats.

The Communist Party of India and Janata Dal (United) have fielded one candidate each for the zilla panchayat. The Janata Dal (U) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) are contesting four and one taluk panchayat constituencies, respectively.

According to sources, 6,500 officials have been assigned for the polling duty in the district. Around 2.500 police personnel are on poll duty, in whose presence, the polling officials on Saturday collected the electronic voting machines from the Government Science College ground. Of the 1,082 polling booths, about 125 have been identified as hypersensitive, 250 as sensitive and 807 normal. The district administration has hired 181 buses and 112 jeeps to meet the transportation needs of the polling officials.
