KOCHI: During April-November 2010, a total of 361,650 tonnes of spices and spice products valued Rs.4,320.88 crore were exported from the country as against 341,950 tonnes valued Rs.3,770.10 crore during April-November 2009, registering an increase of six per cent in volume and 15 per cent in rupee terms of value. In dollar terms the increase is 20 per cent. During April-November 2010, the export of chilli, ginger, fennel and garlic showed an increase, both in volume and value as compared to April-November 2009. The exports of value-added products spice oils and oleoresin also showed an increasing trend as compared to April-November 2009. However, in the case of cardamom (small), cardamom (large), turmeric, fenugreek and mint products, the increase is in terms of value only. The export of coriander has increased in terms of quantity only. All other spices like pepper, cumin, celery, other seeds like mustard, aniseed, ajwanseed etc., nutmeg and mace, curry powder/paste and asafoetida, tamarind etc. have decreased both in terms of volume and value as compared to last year. During April-November 2010, a total quantity of 11,500 tonnes of pepper valued Rs.2,08.50 crore had been exported as against 13,850 tonnes valued Rs.217.70 crore of last year. The unit value of pepper has increased from Rs.157.18 a kilo gram in 2009-10 to Rs.181.30 during 2010-11. Cardamom The export of cardamom (small) during the current period was 575 tonnes valued Rs.65.77 crore as against 875tonnes valued Rs.63.82 crore of last year. During the period a total quantity of 1,66,000 tonnes of chilli valued Rs.1,020.00 crore had been exported as against 1,31,250tonnes valued Rs.835.03 crore last year, registering an increase of 26 per cent in quantity and 22 per cent in value. Ginger During April-November 2010, a quantity of 7,250 tonnes of ginger valued Rs.44.04 crore was exported as against 3,500 tonnes valued Rs.27.13crore of last year. During the period, the export of spice oils and oleoresins had also increased to 4,650 tonnes valued Rs.570.90 crore from 4,640 tonnes valued Rs.488.78 crore of last year. Compared to the spices export target of 4,65,000 tonnes valued Rs.5,100 crore fixed for the financial year 2010-11, the achievement of 361,650 tonnes valued Rs.4,320.89 crore during April-November 2010 is 78 per cent in terms of quantity and 85 per cent in rupee value and 84 per cent in dollar terms of value.
