Kozhikode
Survey held in 10 grama panchayats, 2 Corporation wards Fifty-six hours of classes for each learner in a week Kozhikode: As many as 4,500 people, including school dropouts and illiterates, are likely to get the benefit of the ‘Athulyam' fourth class equivalency learning programme of the LEAP (Lifelong Education Awareness Programme) District Mission during its first phase in the district. The preliminary figure of learners was determined through a door-to-door survey conducted in 10 grama panchayats and two wards of the city Corporation recently. The grama panchayats that were covered in the survey include Perambra, Chorod, Chemanchery, Kunnamangalam, Feroke, Vanimel, Thalakkulathur, Kodanchery, Kakkodi and Kunnummal. Thoppayil and Mukhadar were the wards under the City Corporation that were surveyed. The survey result shows that the highest number of people who will benefit from the literacy programme is from the Perambra grama panchayat. The survey team has identified 763 people for the literacy programme from here. Vanimel, Chemanchery, Kunnummel and Kodanchery grama panchayats too have nearly 500 learners each. The LEAP District Mission has also prepared a list of school dropouts. The preliminary data shows that the highest number of school dropouts is from the Kodanchery panchayat. Formal learning The mission plans to begin the formal learning programme for the identified groups in January. Learners' clusters will be formed in all the selected panchayats under the newly constituted resource groups. Each cluster will comprise 15 learners and an instructor. The classes will be conducted according to the convenience of the learners. Fifty-six hours of classes will be offered to each learner every week. The first batch will complete the course by March 31. C. Abdul Rasheed, Assistant Coordinator of the LEAP District Mission, said the learners would be supplied a special set of textbooks for their tuition classes. The syllabus would cover regional history and significance of the learners' panchayats. Mr. Rasheed said the beneficiaries of ‘Athulyam' would be initiated into e-learning too. Classes in computers and Internet use would be offered to them in the second phase of the project. Rs.6 crore earmarked The State government has earmarked Rs.6 crore to make the project a success. A portion of this fund will be allotted to the district for piloting the programme in selected areas. ‘Athulyam' is the first comprehensive learning programme from the LEAP Kerala Mission after its name was changed from the Kerala Literacy Mission.
