The mob reportedly caused a commotion when the official insisted on ID proof Police officials resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd KOLAR: Barring an incident where a polling official was manhandled by an unruly mob, the zilla and taluk panchayat elections on Sunday passed off peacefully in Kolar district. Polling was held to 28 zilla panchayat seats and 102 taluk panchayat seats. According to preliminary reports, 68 per cent polling was registered in the district. Tension prevailed at Chatrakodihalli in Vakkaleri zilla panchayat seat when several voters manhandled a polling official for insisting on identity proof. Suggandahalli Muniraju, a lecturer and sector officer at booth number 233 on route no. 12 was lifted by the irate mob, taken out of the booth and manhandled. The people, allegedly led by some Janata Dal (Secular) activists, caused a commotion at the polling booth when Mr. Muniraju insisted on an EPIC card or any of the 21 documents approved by the Election Commission of India. Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar Meena and Superintendent of Police K. Thyagarajan rushed to the spot and resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Case registered Following a complaint lodged by Mr. Muniraju, a case was registered against Shivappa, a JD(S) supporter. Mr. Meena said that no other incident was reported in the district. Polling was largely peaceful, according to reports from Bangarpet, Malur, Srinivaspur and Mulbagal taluks.
