Annamalai wins title

The Annamalai team which triumphed on Sunday.

CHIDAMBARAM: Host Annamalai scripted an 85-76 win over Sathyabama to win the title in the all-India inter-university basketball tournament for men here on Sunday.

There wasn't much to choose between the two sides in the initial part of the first session. But Sathyabama escalated the pace towards the end to open up an eight-point lead.

Annamalai cagers started the second quarter positively and penetrated the rival defence with relative ease. Thanks to some sharp shooting and vital rebound collection, the host secured a 61-55 advantage at the halfway mark. With both the teams tightening their defence, the scoring rate dipped considerably in the third quarter. However, the host managed to hold on to the lead.

In a closely contested final session, Annamalai held its nerve to emerge champion. Vigneshwaran top scored for the winner with 29 points.

The results: Final: Annamalai 85 (Vigneshwaran 29, Anandha Krishnan 19) bt Sathyabama 76 (Prasannavenkatesh 24).

Third place: Pune 88 (Siddhant Sinde 30, Akshay Bhosale 23) bt Punjab 87 (Amritpal Singh 33, Amjyot Singh 20).

Semifinals: Annamalai 81 (Sasikumar 23, Vigneshwaran 19) bt Pune 57 (Akshay Bhosale 26, (Siddhant Sinde 13); Sathyabama 76 (Ramkumar 14, Raghuram 13) bt Punjab 66 (Amrtipal Singh 27, Akash Gill 10) .
