JP underscores need for independent media

NELLORE: The 33rd conference of the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) began on Sunday with self-introspection on challenges before the media.

Speakers at the seminar on “Media and Challenges'' expressed concern over undermining of independence of the media by management and private interests at the cost of public good due to alleged “commercialisation'' of the media and “interference'' by politicians. Lok Satta Party president Jayaprakash Narayan called for a self-correcting mechanism to address the challenges faced by the media.

He underscored the need for independent media and judiciary for the survival of democratic polity.

IJU secretary general K Srinivas Reddy said media had come under the onslaught of corporate lobbyists and media managers of late.

Former Press Academy chairman D. Amar also spoke.
