BJP demand does not merit attention, says Kharge

Special Correspondent

‘Ready to discuss 2G spectrum row in Parliament'

‘Opposition does not have any respect

for democracy'

GULBARGA: Union Labour and Employment Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday rejected the Bharatiya Janata Party's demand seeking resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and said the demand was politically motivated which does not merit any attention.

“The Prime Minister has offered to appear before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and what more do they want and why are they harping on the same demand for the JPC?” he said in a chat with The Hindu.

Mr. Kharge said the United Progressive Alliance Government was ready to discuss the controversy surrounding the 2G spectrum allotment issue on the floor of the House and also discuss whether a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe was required to unearth the truth. The government had indicated that it would go by consensus in Parliament on the issue of constituting a JPC, but the Opposition did not allow anything to be discussed in the House.

“The Opposition does not have any respect for democracy or finding a solution in a democratic way by discussing the issue in Parliament and want to force their decision on the government,” he said.

“If the BJP is really interested in unearthing the truth, they should appear before the Public Accounts Committee headed by its senior leader Murli Manohar Joshi and place all the details they have about the 2G spectrum allotment,” Mr. Kharge said. The CBI had already begun its investigation into the issue, Mr Kharge said.

Mr. Kharge criticised the former Sarsanghchalak of the RSS K.S. Sudharshan for making politically oriented speeches at the 3rd Bharath Vikas Sangam “Kalburgi Kampu” by making “false” allegations against the Congress and its economic policies. “The organisers of Kalburgi Kampu should not have allowed their dais to be politicised by the RSS activists,” he said.
