DHAKA: Within a span of a week after recovery of huge ammunition, seven land mines and 97 rounds of bullets were seized on Saturday from a cluster of villages in the frontier Sherpur district adjoining Meghalaya and Assam. The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) which raided the villages, recovered the mines, bullets, 19 SiM cards of mobile phones, three walkie-talkie sets and some Indian currency notes, said a BDR official. Earlier on December 18, police recovered a cache of 13,680 bullets from a house in a village. The BDR claimed that the ammunition recovered from Sherpur, belonged to the outlawed separatist group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). The BDR sources said that the group was trying to reorganise near the border but “it was forced to abandon its ammunition due to our vigilance.” The official also said that the ammunition would be handed over to the police after examination. No arrest was made. Expressing deep concern, Sherpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Nasiruzzaman, said the area was being examined with minesweepers to ensure that the forest area which is a picnic spot and eco-park, were safe.
