Three cops held

Daman: Three policemen of Silvassa Crime Branch in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli have been arrested by the CBI for allegedly threatening a jeweller and demanding bribe, officials said on Monday.

Inspector R. K. Gavit, Head Constable Dashrat Patel and Constable Chandu Patel of Silvassa Crime Branch have been arrested for demanding Rs.20,000 and a gold chain from a Vapi-based jeweller, they said. According to CBI officials, the trio had threatened the jeweller that they would frame him under false charges of theft if he did not meet their demands.

The jeweller approached the CBI, which set up a trap and caught Chandu red-handed accepting bribe from the jeweller, they said, adding that Gavit and Dashrat have also been arrested on the basis of Chandu's statement. An amount of Rs.3.79 lakh was found at Chandu's house, the officials said. - PTI
