All set for ZP polls in Davangere district

There are 9.3 lakh voters in six taluks of the district


139 candidates in fray for 34 zilla panchayat seats

168 of the 1,171 booths identified as hypersensitive


DAVANGERE: As many as 139 candidates are in fray for the 34 zilla panchayat and 457 for the 129 taluk panchayat seats in Davangere district.

Of the 9,30,876 voters in the district, 4,81,725 are men and 4,49,151 women. Of the six taluks in the district, Davangere taluk has 1,71,527 voters, including 88,068 men and 83,459 women. In Harihar taluk, there are 1,22,394 voters of whom 62,783 are men and 59,611 women. Of the 1,52,791 voters in Honnali taluk, 78,794 are men and 73,887 women. Chennagiri taluk has the highest of 2,03,325 voters, comprising 1,06,298 men and 97,027 women. In Harpanahalli taluk, there are 1,74,471 voters, including 90,956 men and 83,515 women. In Jagalur taluk, 54,826 of the 1,06,368 voters are men and the rest (51,542) are women.

The election for both zilla and taluk panchayats in Davangere district will be held on December 31.

Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad told presspersons here on Monday that 1,171 polling booths had been set up in the district.

Superintendent of Police H.S. Venkatesh said 143 booths had been identified as sensitive and 168 as hyper-sensitive.

Adequate security arrangements, including provision to take video footage of the polling, had been made in and around sensitive and hypersensitive booths.

Mr. Vastrad said that over 197 vehicles, including 174 KSRTC buses, had been arranged for poll duty.

There would be a ban on liquor from 7 p.m. on December 29 till 7 p.m. on December 31 and from 11.30 p.m. on January 3 to mid-night of January 4, in view of the counting of votes.

The weekly market fair had been cancelled in five villages in Davangere taluk, two in Harihar, three in Honnali, two in Chennagiri, five in Harpanahalli and two in Jagalur taluks.

Holiday had been declared for State and Union Government offices. educational institutions, industries and factories on the election day.

K.R. Shashidhar, Commissioner of Public Instruction, had been appointed as Special Election Observer for Davangere district.
